What Did Ofsted Say About Our Irchester Nursery?

What Did Ofsted Say About Our Irchester Nursery?

Ofsted's current reports grade settings in several areas rather than giving one overall label. For example, here is how Pop Up Irchester was graded on 21 September 2026. The report also confirms that the nursery met the requirements of both the compulsory and voluntary parts of the Childcare Register.

What Does Strong Standard Mean in an Ofsted Report?

Ofsted now uses a five-point scale. From highest to lowest, the grades are:

  1. Exceptional

  2. Strong standard

  3. Expected standard

  4. Needs attention

  5. Urgent improvement

Ofsted describes expected standard as a setting following the standards set out in statutory and non-statutory legislation and the professional standards expected of it. Strong standard sits one step above that. In Ofsted's words: "The setting reaches a strong standard. Leaders are working above the standard expected of them."

What Did Inspectors See at Our Irchester Nursery?

The report includes a section called "What it's like to be a child at this setting". It describes children who are "happy, confident and deeply engaged in their play and learning". They make choices about how they spend their time and move between indoor and outdoor play.

Highlights from the inspection

  • Kindness and teamwork: children built structures with large wooden blocks, and when a child fell, their friends asked if they were okay and helped them up.

  • Communication and language: the report calls these "particular strengths", with staff holding sustained two-way conversations and reading stories expressively.

  • Understanding feelings: children talk about emotions such as sadness and anger and think about what helps them feel better.

  • Learning about food: children dug up potatoes they had grown themselves, ordered them by size, counted them and talked with the chef about what to make. The report also notes that children enjoy nutritious meals prepared on site.

How Did Ofsted Describe Support for Children and Families?

Ofsted looked closely at how the nursery supports every child, including those who face additional barriers. In particular, the report says that:

  • Settling-in arrangements are "thoughtfully adapted" so children and families can build confidence at their own pace.

  • Staff value children's home languages and learn key words to support communication. They also use visual aids, such as picture and word lanyards, to help children understand routines.

  • Leaders help families with practical steps such as school applications, and parents "report that staff go above and beyond to meet their children's needs".

  • New staff receive a thorough induction covering safeguarding, the Prevent duty, safer sleep and caring for babies.

  • Children become familiar with their future school, so they approach the move to school with confidence and excitement.
